“I want to go lighter” can mean five completely different appointments. Knowing the difference between balayage, foils, a gloss and a full colour before you sit down saves you money and gets you the result you actually pictured.
Full Colour: Wall-to-Wall Change
Permanent colour applied root to tip. It is the right choice for covering grey, going noticeably darker, or resetting hair that has gone patchy after years of highlights. Because it lifts and deposits at the same time, it is also the most committing option — you live with the regrowth line every four to six weeks.
Foil Highlights: Precision and Brightness
Fine sections wrapped in foil so the lightener can work hotter and cleaner. Foils get you the brightest result, the most control near the root, and that crisp, dimensional look. They also grow out with a visible line, so plan on a top-up roughly every eight to twelve weeks.
Everyone brings inspiration photos. Bringing one or two you dislike is far more useful — it tells your colourist instantly whether “warm” means honey or means orange to you.
Balayage: Soft, Painted, Low-Maintenance
Lightener hand-painted onto the surface of the hair, heavier toward the ends. There is no hard regrowth line, so it can stretch four to six months between appointments — which is why it works so well for anyone who cannot get to a salon every two months. It gives softness and movement rather than all-over brightness.
Gloss and Toner: The Finishing Step
A demi-permanent gloss adds shine, kills brassiness and evens out tone. It does not lighten anything. It is the cheapest, fastest service on the colour menu, it takes about twenty minutes, and it is what makes existing colour look freshly done. Most colour clients benefit from one between their bigger appointments.
Lightener changes the level. Toner and gloss change the tone. Almost every complaint about colour is really a complaint about tone.
